Adam and Eve
(Based on Genesis 2-3)

by Nancy I. Sanders

In the beginning, God created the whole wide wonderful world. He formed mounds of earth into majestic mountains. He splashed clear water into crystal blue lakes. He created the great big trumpeting elephant. He made the teeny teeny tiny ant. And God saw that all of it was very, very good.

Then God said, “Let’s make people who are like us.” So God created people in the image of God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. He blessed them. He put Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden to live.

Adam and Eve liked living in the beautiful garden. One day they took a walk. They listened to the birds sing. They felt the soft green grass underneath their feet. They were hungry, so Eve reached up to a tree and picked a juicy, crisp piece of fruit to share. It tasted sweet!

Suddenly a snake slithered by. It was Satan, an angel who sinned and turned away from God. He had taken the form of a snake that day. He wanted to trick Adam and Eve and make them turn away from God, too. “Pss-ss-sst!” he said.

Adam and Eve looked down at their feet. They saw the snake.

“Did God s-s-say you can eat any fruit you want?” Satan asked.

Adam and Eve kept walking. The snake followed close behind.

“What did God s-s-say?” Satan asked again.

“God said we may eat fruit from any tree in the garden that we want,” Eve explained. “Except the tree that is in the middle of the garden. He told us we shouldn’t touch it or we’ll die.”

Satan laughed. “You won’t die. God knows you’ll be wise just like him if you eat the fruit. You’ll know the difference between good and evil.”

By now Adam and Eve had walked to the middle of the garden. They looked at the tree standing there.

Eve reached up and touched a piece of its fruit. “This fruit looks good to eat,” she said. “It would be nice to be wise like God.” She picked it and nibbled off a bite.

“You’re right!” she said to the snake. “I didn’t die!”

Eve handed the fruit to Adam. “Here. Eat some, too. It’s delicious!”

Adam took a bite. “Yes. It’s very good!”

Suddenly, Adam and Eve both felt afraid. They had disobeyed God! They knew they had sinned. They wondered what they should do.

“Listen!” Adam said. “I hear God walking this way.”

“Let’s hide!” Eve said.

Hearts pounding, they hid among the nearby trees.

“Adam! Eve! Where are you?” God called.

Adam answered, “I heard you coming, and I was afraid. I hid behind this tree.”

God asked, “Why are you afraid? Did you eat fruit from the tree I commanded you not to?”

“Yes,” Adam admitted. “Eve gave it to me.”

“The snake tricked me into eating the fruit!” Eve cried out.

God looked down at the ground. He saw the snake, who was Satan in disguise. “You have done a terrible thing,” God said to Satan. “Because of it, one day I will send a descendant of Eve’s to crush your head.”

Satan planned evil against God’s people, but God had a plan for good, instead! One day God planned to send his Son, Jesus. His plan was for Jesus to die on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. Through Jesus, people can turn away from sin and turn back to God.

ACTIVITY
On a small piece of paper, draw a picture of something God created. Put it inside a toy plastic egg. Make several of these eggs. Draw or put a sticker of Jesus inside another egg. Put the eggs in a basket. Later this evening, take turns opening the eggs. Thank God for each thing he created. Thank God especially for sending Jesus as part of his plan for our lives.

DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that Satan was once a beautiful angel? He became proud of his beauty, however, and turned against God. He wanted to be like God and rule the world.

MEMORY VERSE
You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. -Genesis 50:20 (NIV)

PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for your good plan for me. Please help me obey you in my heart and in my actions. I love you. Amen.
