Jesus Feeds the 5000
(Based on John 6:1-15)

by Nancy I. Sanders

Jesus liked to use small things to make big blessings! One day a HUGE crowd of 5000 people followed Jesus. His heart was full of love for each person in the crowd, so He helped them. Many of them were sick, but Jesus made them well again.

By the end of the day, everyone was hungry. “How can we feed all these people?” Jesus asked his disciples.

“Here is a small boy who wants to help,” Andrew said. “But how can a small boy feed 5000 people? It’s impossible!”

Jesus looked at the small boy and smiled. He liked to use small things to make big blessings.

“I have five small loaves of bread,” the small boy said. “Count them and see.”

“But how can five small loaves of bread feed 5000 people?” Andrew asked. “It’s impossible!”

Jesus looked at the small boy and smiled. He liked to use small things to make big blessings.

“I also have two small fish,” the small boy said. “Count them and see.”

“But how can two small fish feed 5000 people?” Andrew asked. “It’s impossible!”

Jesus looked at the small boy and smiled. He liked to use small things to make big blessings.

Jesus thanked the small boy for sharing his small loaves of bread and his small fish. Then Jesus said a special prayer of thanks to God. He next gave each person something to eat until everyone was full. All 5000 of them!

“Now gather the leftovers,” Jesus told his disciples. They picked up twelve baskets of food! Count them and see. Nothing is impossible with God!

Jesus looked at the small boy and gave him a hug. Jesus liked to use small things to make big blessings!

It makes me happy to know Jesus likes to use small things to make big blessings. Today I pray, “Dear Jesus, I’m small, and I’m getting bigger every day. Please use me to bless other people in a big way. Amen.”

The Bible tells me that God is a big God. He’s big enough to do anything! Here’s a verse that tells me how big God really is. “With God, all things are possible.” -Matthew 19:26
